ABOUT ALCOHOL TESTING
What are breath alcohol screenings and when can companies use them as part of employment prerequitistes? Breath alcohol detection instruments, commonly known as the "Breathalyzer," measure how much alcohol is presently in the blood. In contrast to tests for illegal drugs, blood alcohol tests
may show current impairment levels, but not previous use. The individual being checked for alcohol consumption breaths into the device, and the findings are given as a number The number, known as the BAC, or Blood Alcohol Concentration, indicates the alcohol level in the blood of the person at the time the test was taken. It doesn't assess alcohol use from the past.
HOW EMPLOYERS USE ALCOHOL TESTING
Many businesses who conduct alcohol tests on workers make it clear when hiring that this is their practice; their alcohol and drug monitoring procedures are usually included in their employee manuals. Refusal of workers to agree to drug tests may be grounds for dismissal. Employers will usually use alcohol testing only under very specific circumstances:
-
The company may have a program that checks where there is reasonable suspicion, also known as probable cause or for-cause screening, and there are recorded signs of the use of alcohol or drugs by the employee.
-
Another case where alcohol testing may be conducted is post-accident monitoring where there was alleged use of alcohol or drugs that caused property damage or a personal injury incident at the workplace.
-
Random screening may be conducted on an undisclosed, unscheduled basis on workers who are randomly chosen.
-
Alcohol testing is compulsory for workers in certain sectors controlled by the United States Department of Transportation and the United States Department of Defense.
ABOUT FACT LABS
In February 2015, Fast and Accurate Test (FACT) was a place that only existed as a concept. In May 2016 the ribbons were cut on the doors of a business that we believe will set the tone for future health screening companies. Our store locations are independently owned and operated.
